Event planning: RSVP: Send reminders

When it comes to organising an event - you can guarantee there will be people who will wait until the last minute before they bother to RSVP to you.

More often than not, they're not doing it to annoy you, it's just a case of they're not sure at that particular point in time if they can go to the event or not, so they put the invitation to one side.

The other reason why people forget to RSVP is more common. Quite simply, they read your invitation but don't practice good time management techniques - as in do it now. They just put the invitation on the pile of things they have to do and it gets shuffled down to the bottom.

So as you are organising your event, make sure you always leave yourself plenty of time to chase the late responders.

And if the event is a pay as you go type of function - you may need to send reminders to the various message boards and list servs you used to advertise the event initially reminding them of the closing date for responses.

And how true is that. Our organisation runs several free events a year - you know, promo stuff, intro to new products that sort of thing. You'd think everyone would jump at the chance to come - sometimes we even throw in food - depending on the time we're running the event itself. But no. It's like pulling teeth to get people to come - and even those who say yes, half of them don't turn up.

We always send an email reminder a day or two before (in addition to the email confirmation they'ev already received), I hate to think what the attrition rate would be if we didn't.

Personally I think it comes down to manners and customer service. People have forgotten to be polite. I always work on the principle, what would I like to happen to me - and then make sure my actions are true to that - in all cases.

Keep up the good work, great site, and has given me a few items to think about
